Cut and Polish vs Ceramic Coating: What's the Difference?
By Perth Detailing Carstyle, mobile car detailing in Perth, WA
Cut and polish and ceramic coating are two of the most popular paint services in Perth, and they are often mixed up. They sound similar, they both make your car look better and many detailers offer them together. But they do very different jobs. This guide explains what each one does, how they work together and how to decide which one your car needs.
The short answer
Cut and polish fixes your paint. Ceramic coating protects it.
- Cut and polish (also called paint correction) removes defects such as swirl marks, light scratches, water spots and oxidation, so the paint looks clear and glossy again.
- Ceramic coating is a liquid layer that bonds to the paint to protect it and make it easier to clean. It does not remove defects. It seals in whatever finish is underneath.
What is cut and polish?
Cut and polish uses a machine polisher with pads and compounds to remove a very thin layer of clear coat. This levels the surface so light reflects evenly, which brings back depth, clarity and gloss.
It targets swirl marks from washing, light to medium scratches, water spot etching, oxidation and haze. Because it removes a small amount of clear coat, we measure your paint thickness with a gauge first and adjust the plan if a panel is thin.
We offer three levels:
- 1 Stage, Heavy Cutting: an initial correction that reduces heavier imperfections such as water stains and etched marks. From $280.
- 2 Stage, Medium Polishing: adds fine correction to remove swirl marks and light to medium scratches. From $420.
- 3 Stage, Finishing Polish: a final refinement for maximum gloss, depth and clarity. From $490.
These prices are for a hatch, sedan or ute, and larger vehicles cost slightly more. See all the details on our cut and polish page.
What is ceramic coating?
Ceramic coating is a liquid protective layer that bonds to your paint and forms a hard, long lasting shield. Unlike wax or sealants that wear off in weeks or months, a professionally applied coating lasts for years.
It gives you a deep gloss, water that beads and rolls off, easier washing and protection against UV, bird droppings, bugs and tree sap, which matters in Perth's strong sun. It is not scratch proof, but it makes your paint much easier to look after.
Our ceramic coatings start from $890, with paint correction included. You can compare all three options on our ceramic coating page.
Cut and polish vs ceramic coating side by side
- Main job: cut and polish removes defects. Ceramic coating protects the paint.
- Fixes swirl marks and light scratches: cut and polish does. Ceramic coating does not.
- Adds protection: cut and polish does not on its own. Ceramic coating does, for years.
- Gloss: cut and polish restores it. Ceramic coating adds depth and helps keep it.
- How long it lasts: cut and polish lasts as long as the paint is looked after, because new swirls can appear from poor washing. Ceramic coating lasts years, depending on the coating and how you care for it.
- Starting price: from $280 for cut and polish. From $890 for ceramic coating, with paint correction included.
Why they work best together
A ceramic coating locks in whatever is underneath it. If it goes on over swirled and dull paint, the swirls are sealed in and stay visible for the life of the coating. That is why every ceramic coating package we offer starts with paint correction.
It works the other way too. Freshly polished paint with no protection is exposed again to sun, bird droppings and wash marks. Correct the paint first, then protect it. The correction is included in the coating price, so you do not pay for polishing twice.
Which one does your car need?
Choose cut and polish on its own if:
- Your paint has swirl marks or looks dull and tired.
- You want the biggest visual improvement for the lowest price.
- You are getting your car ready to sell.
- You are not ready to commit to a coating yet.
Choose ceramic coating, with paint correction, if:
- Your car is new or well kept and you want to protect it.
- You plan to keep your car for years.
- You want easier washing and less maintenance.
- You want your gloss to last.
Consider paint repair instead if:
- You have deep scratches that go through the clear coat, peeling clear coat or stone chips. Polishing cannot fix these, but our panel paint repair service can.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a ceramic coating without a cut and polish? Technically yes, but we do not recommend it. A coating seals in the finish underneath, so we include paint correction in every coating to make sure that finish is flawless first.
Will cut and polish remove all scratches? No. It removes swirl marks, water spots, etching and light to medium scratches from the clear coat. Deeper scratches can often be reduced but not fully removed, and we tell you what to expect before we start.
How long do the results of a cut and polish last? Polishing removes defects from the paint rather than just covering them, so the improvement lasts as long as the paint is looked after. New swirl marks can appear from automatic car washes or poor wash technique. A ceramic coating or sealant helps protect the finish.
